THE SENSATIONAL SOUL CRUISERS

Location: Tim McLoone's Supper Club, 1200 Ocean Avenue, Asbury Park, NJ
DOORS OPEN AT 6:30pm.

The Sensational Soul Cruisers are an 11 man horn group under led by the superb sax player Screamin' Steve Barlotta and fronted by four soulful vocalists who pay homage and tribute to classic performers from Otis Redding and the Drifters to Barry White, the Commodores and Earth, Wing and Fire. Through experience and hard work, the group captures and emulates the distinctive style, skill and choreography of a classic show band. While it is still sometimes possible to find a band which features a similar line up of instruments, it is unlikely that you will ever find another that performs with as much energy, passion, and talent while capturing the true essence of the Jersey Shore sound and its true R&B roots, Memphis, Motown, Beach Music and Philly Soul.

JAMES MADDOCK & BAND

with very special guest: JEFFREY GAINES

Location: Tim McLoone's Supper Club, 1200 Ocean Avenue, Asbury Park, NJ
***James Maddock, the songwriter's songwriter, who has earned the respect of masterful writers such as Bruce Springsteen and Willie Nile, has built his acclaimed legacy on humbly honoring purity of expression. Many albums in his catalog are elegantly spare, conveying his songs and sentiments in the most direct possible way. But for his latest, The Green, the songs guided him into recording the most eclectic, exhilaratingly soulful, and imaginatively produced album in his career. "This is my best album. It's an upbeat record with really strong songs and a lot of surprises," the British transplant reveals. "It all happened really naturally. I just listened to where the songs where going and allowed myself the time to give each one a proper sonic home." The Green truly captures NPR's accolade that "his timeless songwriting style, which seems to draw from great songwriters of every era, conveys quiet confidence and lovely intimacy."

Since 1999, James Maddock's boldly vulnerable songwriting, honeyed rasp, and distinct folk and Americana aesthetic have garnered acclaim from icons, peers, and tastemaking outlets like NPR, American Songwriter, Relix Magazine, and CMT Edge as well as having performed with the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Willie Nile, Aaron Comess (Spin Doctors) and David Immergluck (Counting Crows). He's built a respected international profile through tireless touring. Relix notes: "James Maddock possesses the kind of lived-in, craggy voice that would sound authoritative if he were singing the sports pages. Fortunately, he doesn't need to do that because his compositional skills are a match for his delivery."

In England, James was the frontman for the Columbia Records band Wood where he was introduced to a mainstream audience when songs from the group's debut, Songs From Stamford Hill, were prominently featured in the TV hit Dawson's Creek. In 2003, Maddock moved to NYC, and launched his solo career. His 2009 album Sunrise On Avenue C won a New York Music Award for "Best Americana Album," while its follow-up, Wake Up And Dream, ranked among the top albums of 2011 in WFUV's (NYC) Listener Poll. This summer Maddock and his great band will be performing entries from The Green, as well as fan faves and catalogue nuggets. Live, Maddock imaginatively reinterprets his oeuvre to keep it fresh for him and his audience. "I love how songs reveal themselves differently in the live setting," James says. "I'm grateful I have such a large body of work and an audience to share a creative dialogue with. I feel very lucky."

***With only his voice and a guitar for accompaniment, Harrisburg, PA native Jeffrey Gaines has earned a reputation as a captivating performer, heralded for his soul-searching lyrics and his powerful live performances. The self titled Jeffrey Gaines, the first of his five studio releases garnered four stars from The Philadelphia Inquirer, describing Gaines as "...an ethereal soul...insistent, impassioned, full of self-knowledge." Somewhat Slightly Dazed, and Galore followed. Interview Magazine called Gaines' music "soul-searching" and "refreshingly free of jargon, sentiment or cliche." He later released Always Be to both critical and commercial praise. Featuring his emotional interpretation of "In Your Eyes" and his own soaringly beautiful "Always Be," the album hit #45 on the Billboard Heatseekers Chart. The New York Post proclaimed Always Be as "a dozen-song mix...that completely illustrates the depth he is capable of." Gaines' impressive catalogue grew with Toward The Sun, produced by Mitchell Froom (Elvis Costello, Bonnie Raitt, and Crowded House). The Boston Globe declared that "Gaines' soulful, wounded vocals make a case for his being one of pop's finest singers...an artist who deserves far more attention than some of his more hyped, yet less talented peers." Mojo noted, "This established soul-folkie's sexy growl has an underlying edge, making it a memorable album. Heartfelt and unpretentious."

Steve Forbert

Location: Tim McLoone's Supper Club, 1200 Ocean Avenue, Asbury Park, NJ
"Compromised" is singer-songwriter Steve Forbert's newest release and from the comparative essay of the disc's title song, (complete with catchy chorus and signature harmonica solo), to the exasperated advice for "everyman" on the album closer, "Whatever, Man," Steve Forbert leaves no stone unturned in his exploration of life, love, turmoil and survival.

After years with local bands, Steve Forbert left his hometown of Meridian, Mississippi in his early 20s and headed for the Big Apple in search of recording deals and larger audiences. He started out playing for change at Grand Central Station and hitting every open mic night he could before eventually moving into the club scene at infamous spots like New York City's CBGB's. At a time when rootsy rock was fading in favor of punk edged bands such as the Ramones, Talking Heads, and Blondie, Forbert's folk pop "Romeo's Tune" hit #11 on the charts and brought him into the international spotlight. Critics and the public embraced his melodic and lyrical styles, a more traditional sound among the post disco punk and rock of the late '70s and early '80s. Always following his own instincts, Forbert says, "I've never been interested in changing what I do to fit popular style and needs." And that's the motto he has lived by since the release of his debut album, Alive on Arrival, in 1978. Rolling Stone contributing editor David Wild recently wrote that "now or then, you would have been hard pressed to find a debut effort that was simultaneously as fresh and accomplished as Alive on Arrival. It was like a great novel by a young author who somehow managed to split the difference between Mark Twain and J.D. Salinger."

Adrian Legg

Location: Tim McLoone's Supper Club, 1200 Ocean Avenue, Asbury Park, NJ
Adrian Legg is an English guitar player who has been called "impossible to categorize". He plays custom guitars that are a hybrid of electric and acoustic, and his fingerstyle picking technique has been acknowledged by the readers of Guitar Player who voted Legg the "best acoustic fingerstyle" player four years in a row. From his early start as a bench technician customising electric guitars, Legg moved into guitar instruction, publishing books and videos on guitar technique. In 1996 and 1997, Legg shared the stage with acclaimed guitar experts Joe Satriani, Eric Johnson and Steve Vai as part of the G3 tour. Vai called Legg "Uncle Adrian" and Satriani said of Legg's musicianship "He's simply the best acoustic guitar player I've ever heard. I don't know anyone else who can create such a cascade of beautiful notes... Adrian plays like he's got hammers for fingers."

Starting to gig as a solo artist in the mid 1970s, Legg won a Guitar magazine solo acoustic competition in both the composition and performance categories, and began writing articles for that magazine and other publications. He released his first of five albums in Britain in 1976. Soon after he began working for Rose Morris & Company's musical instrument and equipment store doing guitar repairs, quality control and manufacturer contact. That led to collaborations with numerous guitar makers, amplifier and pickup manufacturers as well as guitar clinics and product demonstrations at musical instrument and equipment shows in Britain, Europe and later America and Japan. His compositions began being used by English radio and TV programs, and even London's Ballet Rambert.

With his 1990 American recording debut, Legg found even greater success as a regularly touring solo act, headlining and sharing bills with fellow guitarists Richard Thompson, David Lindley, Eric Johnson (whose 2005 album Bloom Legg plays on) and Joe Satriani (on both his own shows and as part of his G3 Tour package with Johnson and Steve Vai. Guitar Player named his records Guitar for Mortals and Mrs. Crowe's Blue Waltz as Best Acoustic Album (1992 & '93) and Wine, Women & Waltz as Best Overall Guitar Album (1994) in its annual readers' polls. He even has three instructional videos on the U.S. market as well as two books.

Throughout his career, he has earned the highest praise from the media. "Legg is, above all, a guitarist of great power, invention and versatility," observes the St. Petersburg Times. "Through fast-fingered picking, spontaneously layering parts and occasional ringing harmonics, he sounds like an orchestra." Guitar Player heralds how he "combines a sublime melodic sense with a mighty right-hand groove, creating pretty music with rhythmically aggressive undercurrents," while Acoustic Guitar notes that "the guitar is the most versatile instrument in the world, and nobody demonstrates this better than Adrian Legg." For Legg, the essence of his creativity is in live performance. "Playing live is the whole point. Everyone makes a journey, an effort; we all come together - me, the audience, the people who run the venue - to share this wonderful, universal, human emotional interaction. This is where music lives."

Described by Audio magazine as a "kind of cross between Robert Fripp and Garrison Keillor," Legg is a genuine entertainer who excels at not only painting pictures and telling stories with music but also wittily regaling his audiences with tales from his life and travels and his cogent, oblique yet thought provoking observations on a spectrum of topics. It's all part of his dedication to making his performances a full-blooded emotional experience. So it's no wonder that popular BBC radio personality Andy Kershaw says of Legg, "Quite simply, there is no one else like him," citing his "dazzling technique and equally large dollops of spirit, humor, passion, eclecticism and spontaneity." The results of that approach are simply irresistible and unforgettable.
